Can I DIY Car Gearbox Repairs?

Car gearbox repairs are likely to be the most expensive type of maintenance a car will ever undergo, as drivers know all too well. It’s no surprise, then, that noisy or stiff gearboxes bring the average recession-hit driver out in a cold sweat. Since the beginning of the credit crunch, DIY on cars and homes has become much more popular, but it simply isn’t an option for car gearbox repairs.

Some car maintenance is easily done at home with a manual and a little common sense, such as changing brake lights or wheels. However other jobs are much more complex. Car gearbox repairs are an example of the more intricate of car maintenance jobs. Gearboxes are intricate pieces of equipment, and the average motorist is unlikely to be able to identify the problem theirs is suffering with. And it is logical that if they can’t identify the problem, they certainly won’t be able to fix it!

Fiddling with the gearbox to try and locate the source of a strange noise would seem the correct place to start in diagnosing the problems. Unfortunately very few drivers, even very masculine types, can honestly say they understand they intricate workings of a gearbox, so there’s a high chance of making the problem worse. When gearbox problems are made even worse, the driver’s bank balance will suffer, as will the car’s value and safety. Don’t forget that it’s very difficult to find a buyer for a car with gearbox problems.

Tempting as DIY may seem, it simply isn’t safe unless the driver is a well qualified mechanic. Even amongst professional mechanics, some know more about car gearbox repairs than others. It is always best to have the gearbox problem checked over by an expert. It is expensive, and drivers obviously have better things to spend their money on than car gearbox repairs, but you can’t put a price on safety and there’s always the cheaper option of reconditioned gearboxes should replacement be necessary.
