Fujifilm X-Pro1 Finally Gets Pricing: $1700, Plus $600 Each For Lenses

xpro1Well, that’s the end of that dream for me. I was really looking forward to owning one of these lovely little cameras, but Fujifilm has just gone and priced it right out of my range. Amazon has put up its pre-order pages for the camera and its lenses, and the earlier rumors were true: the camera sells for $1700 body-only, and the lenses aren’t cheap, either: $600 for the 18mm and 35mm, and $650 for the 60mm macro. Damn it!

Dear Aunt TUAW: Help me find a WiFi stumbler app for Lion

Dear Aunt TUAW,

I’m a Mac IT professional, and often find myself configuring, troubleshooting, and optimizing wireless networks.

In the past I used AP Grapher to graph wireless strength and find competing Wi-Fi networks as I walk around my clients’ offices. This allows me to pick the best channel to use with the least competition, troubleshoot wireless strength, and find the optimal location for my hardware.

In Lion, AP Grapher has gone from unstable to unusable. I’ve found that it hasn’t been updated since 2007.

I have tested other Mac stumbler applications, but have yet to find one that works with Lion. Most crash on launch and others don’t reliably detect wireless networks.

Can you recommend a Mac application for graphing my wireless strength and recording info about competing wireless networks?

Thanks!

Your loving nephew,

Aaron

Dear Aaron,

Auntie asked around and it looks like iStumbler will be your best bet. Note that it’s currently at its 100 GM Candidate 3 beta stage of development. Another suggestion is the open source KisMAC.

You might also want to try out the Wi-Fi diagnostics app that’s bundled with Lion’s Core Services.

Hugs,

Auntie T.

Special thanks to Fraser Hess, Adrian Burgess, Alex Patsay, Harris Kleyman, Alex Sebenski and Julian Kussman.

Let’s start with the Phen375 ingredients.

L-Carnitine, Capsaicin, dehydoepiandrosterone, sympathomimetic amine and trimethylxanthine are the ingredients contained in Phen375 which is an artificial supplement for burning fat.

Daily iPhone App: Lingibli

Learning a new language can be challenging, especially when you’re not in an environment where that langue is predominant. Lingibli is an iPhone app that’ll bridge that gap by helping you learn vocabulary and basic phrases from native speakers. The app will teach you the top 100 words which comprise the bulk of conversational language.

Lingibli lets you select from a list of common words or phrases. The words are listed individually and include several related expressions. For example, the Spanish language pack includes the word for computer, ordenador, and phrases like “turn on the computer” (encienda el ordenador). The phrases are organized into categories which cover topics like time, numbers, eating and getting help. This phrase list would be extremely helpful for someone who is traveling.

When you select a word or phrase, you can listen to a native speaker pronounce it clearly and properly. They speak with the correct emphasis and talk slowly enough for new learners to understand. This audio component is the key to learning how to speak each word or phrase properly and Lingibli handles it very well.

To make the language learning process fun, you can also use Lingibli as a game. Customers can visit the company’s website and print up a sheet with QR codes. The codes contain common words that you can paste around the house. Lingibli has a built-in QR code scanner that’ll identify the word and speak it back to you. If you have kids, you can hand them your iPhone and send them on a language-scanning adventure.

Lingibli is available for free from the iOS App Store. The app supports 19 different languages including Arabic, Catalan, Czech, Danish, German, Greek, English, Spanish, Slovak, Finnish, French, Italian, Dutch, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Swedish, Turkish. Each language pack costs US$4.99 or you can buy all of them for $24.99.

Nikon posts Q3 2011 earnings, sees significant losses due to Thailand floods

Nikon posted its Q3 earnings report this morning, and there isn’t a whole lot to smile about. The cameramaker had to swallow a one-off loss of ¥10.9 billion last quarter (approximately $143.1 million), due to widespread flooding that devastated its Thailand manufacturing plant, in October. Today’s report comes just a day after Sony issued similarly dire figures, which it largely attributed to last year’s flooding, as well. For the third quarter ended December 31st, Nikon posted a ¥3.7 billion loss (about $48.6 million), compared with the ¥9.7 billion ($127.3 million) it saw in net profits over the same period in 2010. Operating profits also fell to ¥8.2 billion from ¥18.6 billion in 2010, while total revenue dropped from ¥253.8 billion in Q3 2010 to ¥215.4 billion, last quarter. The company remains optimistic about the future, though, forecasting net gains of ¥55 billion this year, coupled with an expected revenue of ¥925 billion. For the full report, check out the source links below.

Pentax confirms the rumors, mirrorless K-01 coming March 2012 (video)

Pentax confirms the rumors, mirrorless K-01 coming March 2012 (video)

We heard it was coming, and confirmation arrives today of Pentax’s latest model. the K-01. The manufacturer is cheer-leading the fact that it uses the world’s thinnest interchangeable lens for lens-interchangeable cameras, which really rolls off the tongue. The body is compatible with the rest of your K-series lens, although they’re presumably going to look awkwardly thick in comparison. The 40mm lens can cope with aperture settings down to f/1.8, while the camera packs a new 16.28 megapixel CMOS sensor, with an ISO range of 100 to 25,600. Video chops have also been improved; a new recording button for instant start and a stereo mic differentiate it from the K-5. Video capture can be done at 1080p with 30, 25 or 24fps settings available. The aluminum-bodied camera will arrive in yellow, black and white next month, priced at $750 for the high-design body or $900 with the DA 40mm lens included. The lens will also be available, priced at $250. You can see designer Marc Newson emote about his latest creation in the video right after the break.
