Free Alternative To Microsoft Office Adds New Users … And ‘Hackers’ (MSFT)
The next big release of LibreOffice is due out next week, The Document Foundation has promised.
It’s a victory lap for a small group of developers who left Oracle to try and improve a solid free alternative to Microsoft Office.
The Document Foundation sprung to life a little over a year ago, September 2010, after Oracle bought Sun and inherited OpenOffice.org, a free Office competitor that had been around since 1999.
OpenOffice.org was starting to gain in popularity, but Oracle had little interest in it. Most of the core developers left, started the Document Foundation, took the open source code they developed, and started working on their next version.
After a big kerfuffle over the situation, Oracle handed OpenOffice.org over to the Apache Foundation.
Now, developer support for LibreOffice has swelled. Its foundation claims more than 400 new developers: 50 paid developers and another 350 volunteers. Developers (who call themselves hackers) come from the former Sun/Oracle team but also from other big Linux companies like SUSE, Red Hat, and Canonical.
More importantly, as of September, the foundation calculates that there is a total of 25 million LibreOffice users worldwide and it claims it is on its way to “a target of 200 million users worldwide before the end of the decade,” it declared in a blog post.
LibreOffice is available for Windows, Macs and Linux. It includes a word processor, spreadsheet, database, drawing app and presentation maker. A document created in LibreOffice can be viewed and edited in Microsoft Office (and OpenOffice.org, for that matter) with support for most Office features. The team promises that the next version, 3.5, will be chocked full of more features.

Here’s What’s Next For Sphero, The Robotic Ball You Control With Your Smartphone
If you’re unfamiliar, Sphero is the small robotic ball by Orbotix that you can control with your Android phone or iPhone.
It might sound like a basic idea, but Orbotix is thinking big for the future. Their new apps will use Sphero as a controller and they’ll also take advantage of augmented reality to make Sphero games more fun.
Chuck Lepley, marketing manager at Orbotix, demoed two games for us that implement Sphero as the controller.

The first, Chromo, is a Simon Says-style game where you hold Sphero and twist your hand to activate whichever color your phone displays.
The second, with a working title of “Space Fighter,” lets you steer a spaceship by maneuvering Sphero in your hand and fire missiles at enemies by tapping your phone’s screen.
The augmented reality games make use of overlaying virtual graphics on the real world. Lepley mentioned a game that would let users fire Sphero out of a virtual slingshot that moves it through the real world to destroy virtual targets. He also demoed a real-world Pong-style game, and while it’s only a sketch of a finished product to come, we loved it.
Orbotix calls this type of gaming “mixed reality” — control in the virtual world resulting in play in the real world. And they want independent developers to take it even further. The Sphero SDK is out for the programming-minded to bring their ideas to life.

Want one? Sphero is available online right now for $129. It will land in retail stores Q3 this year, and Orbotix may begin direct international shipping as early as Q2.
